Historical Description

HINDERWELL is a parish, township and village with a station on the Saltburn and Whitby branch of the North Eastern railway, 9 miles north-west-by-west from Whitby and 14 from Guisboro’, in the Whitby division of the Riding, eastern division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Whitby strand, Whitby union and county court district, rural deanery of Whitby, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The township, governed from 1870 by a Local Board, is now controlled by an Urban District Council of twelve members, formed under the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73). The church of St. Hilda is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, rebuilt in 1774, nave, south porch and embattled western tower, rebuilt in 1817, and contains 2 bells: the church, restored in 1895, has 300 sittings: in the churchyard is St. Hilda’s well, from which the name of the parish is taken. The register dates from the year 1601. The living is a rectory, with the chapelry of Roxby annexed, joint net; early value £300, including 200 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1898 by the Rev. Harry Spencer Moore M.A. of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge Here are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan chapels. A cemetery of one acre was formed in 1884, at a cost of £350; it is under the control of a burial board of 9 members. St. Hilda’s Almshouses, consisting of a block of five cottages, a public reading room and a saddlers' shop, were the gift of the late John Corner esq. and by his will, are in the control of three trustees. There are charities amounting to £5 1s. 6d. yearly value. The Grinkle Park Ironstone Mining Co. Limited exists here. An annual show of foals and horses is held in the month of August. Gertrude Lady Palmer, of Grinkle Park, Loftus, is lady of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is strong clay; subsoil, clay and stone. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans. The area of the township and Urban District is 1,656 acres of land and 191 of foreshore; rateable value, £5,709; the population of the township in 1911 was 2,491, and in the ecclesiastical parish. 2,656.
