Historical Description

HOLBECK is a township and head of union within the municipal and parliamentary borough of Leeds, and a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, on the south bank of the Aire, extending from Dewsbury and Meadow roads to the Folly, one mile from Briggate. The township of Holbeck is represented in the Leeds Town Council by an alderman and six councillors. The church of St. Matthew, erected in the years 1829 to 1832, is a noble stone structure, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave, with a tower surmounted by a spire and containing a clock: in the chancel are three stained windows, those on the east and north were given by J. O. March esq. and Mrs. March: there are memorial tablets to the wife of William Naylor esq. and to the late Rev. John Hutton Fisher Kendall, incumbent of Holbeck for 24 years, erected by his friends and congregation: the font and several ancient tablets were taken from the old church. The register dates from the year 1717. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Leeds and held by the Rev. Osmond Cookson M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. The area is 350 acres; the population in 1871 was 10,206.
