Historical Description

HOLLYM is a parish, township and scattered village, about a mile from the German Ocean, 2 miles south from Withernsea station on the branch of the North Eastern railway from Hull to that place, 13 south-east from Hedon and 2 ½ north-east from Patrington, in the Holderness division of the Riding, south division of the wapentake of Holderness, south Holderness petty sessional division, Patrington union, Hedon county court district, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Nicholas is a plain building of white brick, consisting of chancel, nave, vestry and an embattled western tower containing two bells: it was rebuilt in 1814 and again in 1884, at a cost of £980, and has 175 sittings. The register dates from the year 1564. The living is a discharged vicarage, with Withernsea annexed, joint net yearly value £230, including 250 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Rev. Charles Day B.A., J.P. and held since 1909 by the Rev. James Frederic Tomlinson M.A. of Christ Church, Oxford. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1860. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. D.L. of Sledmere, who is lord of the manor, Mrs. Sykes, of Sunningdale, Berks, the owner of Rysome Garth, Col. Henry Broadley Harrison-Broadley M.P. of Welton House, Capt. Sir William Pierrepont Wilson-Todd bart. of Halnaby Hall, Messrs. Thompson, Mr. T. C. Cover-dale and the Rev. Charles Day J.P. are the chief landowners The soil is strong clay; subsoil, red clay. The crops are chiefly beans, wheat, oats and barley. The acreage of the township is 2,120; rateable value, £1,958; the population in 1911 was 218.
