HOLME-ON-SPALDING-MOOR is a parish, extensive township and village, on the high road between Market Weighton and Selby, with a station on the Market Weighton and Selby branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 4 ½ miles south-west from Market Weighton, in the Howdenshire division of the Riding, Holme Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, Holme Beacon petty sessional division, Howden union and county court district, rural deanery of Weighton, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. John the Baptist and All Saints, situated on a hill, is an edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 3 bells: there are 400 sittings. The south side of the tower, south aisle and chancel were restored in 1906-7, and the north aisle in 1911, under the direction of Mr. Temple Moore, architect. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, endowed with a lay rectory by the patrons and impropriators, St. John’s College, Cambridge, net yearly value £700, including 1,339 acres of glebe and residence, and held since 1902 by the Rev. George Robinson M.A. of that college, and rural dean of Weighton. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. The charities amount to about £85 yearly. The hill on which the church stands affords a fine view of the country for 20 miles round, and on it formerly stood the beacon which gave the name to this division of the wapentake. Holme Hall, a mansion in a well-timbered park, is now the property of Mrs. Amy Mary J. Harford (nee Stourton), of the British Legation, Caracas, and in the occupation of John Lupton Booth esq.; attached to the residence is a Catholic chapel, erected by Lord Langdale, 1743, and dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Mrs. Harford, who is lady of the manor, Lord Estcourt, H. E. Preston esq. J.P. of Middlethorpe Manor, and the vicar are the chief landowners. The soil is principally light, but there is some strong clay and peat land; the subsoils are red marl, blue clay, sand, gravel and blue marl. The principal crops are wheat, barley, turnips, potatoes and seeds. The area is 11,463 acres of land and 59 of water; rateable value, £9,715; the population in 1911 was 1,685, including 76 officials and 224 boys in the St. William’s Training School for Roman Catholic Boys.
