Historical Description

HOLMFIRTH is a town and head of a county court district, lying in two deep valleys at the confluence of the rivers Holme and Ribbleden, and is situated in and forms part of the parishes of Kirkburton and Almondbury and of the townships of Cartworth. Upper Thong and Wooldale; it is a polling-place for the southern division of the Riding, 6 miles south from Huddersfield, of south-west from Kirkburton, 20 ½ north-west from Sheffield, 15 west from Barnsley, 16 ½ from Halifax, 21 ¾ from Bradford, 22 ½ from Leeds, 26 ½ from Todmorden, 183 from London and 39 ¾ from Doncaster, in the upper division of Agbrigg wapentake, Huddersfield union, rural deanery of Huddersfield, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. Holmfirth was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1858 and comprises the townships of Cartworth and Wooldale, both in the parish of Kirkburton. The Lancashire and Yorkshire railway company has a branch extending to this town in connection with the Huddersfield and Sheffield line. The church of the Holy Trinity, in Wooldale township, is a stone structure, erected in 1777 on the site of a former chapel of ease, and consists of chancel, nave and aisles, with square embattled tower containing 6 bells, cast about 1830, and a clock; it has an organ: the interior was restored in 1875, at a cost of £2,000. The register dates from the year 1750. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence and about 50 acres of glebe, in the patronage of the vicar of Kirkburton and held by the Rev. John Collins M.A, of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. The Congregationalists, Wesleyans and United Methodist Free Church have each a large chapel here. The Town Hall, a spacious stone building, erected in 1842 at a cost of upwards of £3,000, and the property of a company of shareholders, is used for public meetings, concerts and entertainments, a part of the building being occupied by the Chamber of Commerce. Courts leet are held in April and October. A grant of £900 was made out of the county rate for a lock-up of three cells and a superintendent constable’s residence. The Conservatives and Liberals have each a club and reading room here. Gas works were constructed in 1840. The woollen manufacture constitutes the chief trade of this district and there are many important mills in the valleys around. The neighbourhood also furnishes large supplies of stone. Cattle fairs are held on the last Saturday before the 31st of March, first Saturday after the 4th of May and the last Saturday in October. The Victoria, situated near the railway station, is the principal hotel and is well adapted for the requirements of commercial gentlemen. An awful flood occurred here on the morning of the 5th of February, 1852, from the bursting of the Bilberry reservoir, when upwards of eighty lives were lost and property to the amount of nearly £100,000 destroyed: in commemoration of this calamitous event, five almshouses have been erected. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 5,613.
