Historical Description
HOLTBY is a parish, township and village, to the west of the York and Hull road, which here forms the boundary between the North and East Ridings, and is 2 miles south-west from Holtby station on the York and Market Weighton branch of the North Eastern railway and 5 north-east from York, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer East, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Bulmer, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. Holy Trinity Church is a small edifice of brick, rebuilt in 1792, and completely restored in 1882, at a cost of £1,000, raised by subscriptions; it consists of apsidal chancel, nave, south porch and a small western tower containing 2 bells; a memorial window was erected in 1900 to the late Rev. Richard Surtees M.A. rector 1851—99, who died in Oct. 1899: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from about the year 1679. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £207, including 52 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1910 by the Rev. John Robinson, of St. Bees, who is also vicar of Warthill. There are charities of about £16 yearly value. Charles Talbot Agar esq. of Brockfleld Hall, Warthill, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil and subsoil are sandy. The chief crops are corn, potatoes and root crops. The area is 901 acres; rateable value, £1,516; the population in 1911 was 129.
The children attend the schools at Gate Helmsley, Warthill & Dunnington.
