Historical Description

HOOK is a township and ecclesiastical parish formed from the parish of Snaith. in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of Osgoldcross wapentake, rural deanery of Snaith. archdeaconry and diocese of York, Goole union and county court district; and is situate on the south bank of the river Ouse, between Goole and Howden, from which places it is equidistant about 2 miles; a portion of the parish has been detached to form the ecclesiastical parish of Goole. The North Eastern railway (Hull and Doncaster section) crosses the river on a swing bridge; the nearest station is Booth Ferry Road. The church of St. Mary is a small and ancient building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and aisles, with turret and 2 bells; an organ was erected here in 1866. The register dates from the year 1633, but there is an interval between that year and the year 1678. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200, in the gift of George Sotheron-Estcourt esq. M.P. and held by the Rev. Wm. Booth. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. Jefferson’s charity amounts to £54 yearly. Hook House is the residence of Thomas Kelsey esq. The manorial rights are divided; George Sotheron-Estcourt esq. M.P. the trustees of Rev. J. D. Jefferson, and James Montagu are the principal landowners. The soil is a rich warp; the chief crops are wheat and potatoes. The area of the township is 2,001 acres, of which 239 are water; rateable value, £16,486; the population of the township in 1871 was 4,014; of the ecclesiastical parish 483; the remainder of the township being included in the town and ecclesiastical parish of Goole.
