Historical Description

HORBURY is a township and ecclesiastical parish, with two stations, one at Horbury junction and one at Horbury bridge, bn the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, in the parish of Wakefield, 3 miles west-south-west from Wakefield, 4 south-east from Dewsbury, and 11 east-north-east from Huddersfield, and is a polling place for the southern division of the Riding, in the lower division of the Agbrigg wapentake, Wakefield union, rural deanery and county court district, Craven archdeaconry and Ripon diocese, situated on the Calder and the Hebble navigation. The church of St. Peter is a stone building in the Italian style, rebuilt in 1794 in place of an earlier Norman edifice, and consists of chancel, nave, transept and tower with spire, containing 6 bells dating from 1792, and a clock: there are three stained windows: the re-erection cost about £8,000, defrayed solely by Mr. John Carr of Horbury. The register dates from the year 1598, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200 with residence and 55 acres of glebe, in the gift of the vicar of Wakefield and held by the Rev. John sharp M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge, and surrogate. The Congregationalists, Methodist Free Church, Wesleyans, and Primitive Methodists have chapels here. The town lands with houses produce £300 yearly, applied to the repair of the church and the river banks, the remainder being given to the necessitous poor. In 1858 the sisters of Mercy established an institution called the Female Penitentiary, attached to which is a hospital for aged women; the whole being supported by voluntary contributions. Woollen cloths, worsted, flannels and yarns are manufactured here; and there are stone quarries. At Horbury Junction are iron works and railway wagon works. Lord Conyers is lord of the manor; and Charles George Milnes Gaskell, esq. Mrs. Frances Battye and, the trustees of the late John Francis Carr are chief landowners, and there are several smaller owners. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is partly rock and partly clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, seeds and turnips. The area is 1,279 acres; rateable value, £24,000: the population in 1861 was 3,246, and in 1871, 3,977.
