Historical Description

HORNBY is a parish, township and village, 4 miles north-north-east from Jervaulx station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 north-west from Bedale, 5 south-south-west from Catterick and 9 south-east from Richmond, in the Richmond division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of East Hang, Leyburn union, county court district of Northallerton, Catterick East rural deanery, Richmond archdeaconry and Ripon diocese. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock and 4 bells: in the Holderness chapel are several brasses to the Mountford family, and two recumbent effigies, at present unidentified; and in the chapel is an effigy in alabaster of John Mare: in the north aisle are two figures, probably representing Robert Hornby and Christina, his widow, founders of a charity here: a fine oak screen extends across the chancel, enclosing also two sides of the Holdernese chapel, and on its panels are remains of curious paintings: there is also a stone monument to the D’Arcy family, dated 1572: the church was thoroughly restored by George, 9th Duke of Leeds, in 1878—9, at a cost of £6,000, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1582. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £270, including 7 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of York, and held since 1903 by the Rev. William Frederick Drury M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The impropriate tithe amounts to £640 and belongs to the Dean and Chapter of York and a lessee. Hornby Castle, the seat of the Duke of Leeds J.P. is an ancient castellated mansion, founded by the family of St. Quintin, whose heiress carried it by marriage to the D’Arcy family, about the close of the 16th century; the house contains a fine collection of valuable paintings, and the grounds are tastefully laid out and command delightful prospects of the rich and picturesque vale of Bedale; the park covers about 700 acres. The Duke of Leeds is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is heavy loam; subsoil, clayey, with stones and black earth. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans and potatoes. The acreage of the township is 1,579 of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £1,945; the population in 1911 was 108 in the township and 480 in the ecclesiastical parish.
