Historical Description

HORSFORTH. on the Aire, is a large and populous clothing village, in the parish of Guiseley, 5 miles northwest from Leeds, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of the wapentake of Skyrack, Wharfedale union and Leeds petty sessional division and county court district, Otley rural deanery. Craven archdeaconry and Ripon diocese: the North Eastern railway has a station about three-quarters of a mile from the centre of the village and the Midland railway at Calverley Bridge (Leeds and Bradford line) at about the same distance: the village is governed by a Local Board of 15 members. An iron bridge, connecting Horsforth with Bramley, was erected across the river Aire in 1819, by J. Pollard esq. at a cost of £1,500. The church of St. Margaret is a plain stone building, rebuilt in 1758: nothing definite is known of the original church: the present edifice is in the form of a Roman basilica with turret and 1 bell, and contains 425 sittings: the east window is stained, and there is a monument to the stanhope family (1708). The register, which is in tolerably good condition, dates from the year 1687. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £177, in the gift of Walter Thomas William Spencer-Stanhope esq. J.P. and held by the Rev. Thomas Rhodes Walton Pearson B.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. Another church is now (1881) in course of erection. There are chapels for Baptists and Wesleyan, Primitive and Free Church Methodists. There is a Mechanics’ Institution. Gas works were established in 1853, and there are some excellent quarries of millstone grit and Yorkshire stone. Horsforth Hall is a stone building erected in 1707 on the site of an old hall, and is the residence of Surr William Duncan esq. Walter Thomas William Spencer-Stanhope esq. J.P. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loam: subsoil, sandstone. The land is chiefly pasture. The population in 1871, 5,465; the area 2,801 acres; and the rateable value, £19,580 4s.
