Historical Description

HORTON-IN-RIBBLESDALE is a parish and village, with a station on the settle and. Carlisle line of the Midland railway, 6 miles north from settle, 22 north-west from Skipton, 26 north-east from Lancaster, and 242 from London, in the Northern division of the Riding, Settle union and county court district, Ewcross petty sessional division, west division of Staincliff and Ewcross wapentake, rural deanery of North Craven, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, and is situated on the banks of the river Ribble, between the mountains of Penyghent, Ingleborough and Whernside, which are the highest in the county. The church of St. Oswald in a stone building, in the Norman style, supposed to have been built in the reign of Stephen; it consists of nave, transept, low square tower and 3 bells, and is now being partially restored. The registers date from 1607, and are in a good state of preservation. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £137, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev. Joseph senior LL.D. University College, Glasgow. The charities tor distribution are of about £70 yearly value. Quarries are worked in the parish. The neighbourhood abounds, in picturesque scenery and there are many natural caves and other places of interest. John W. Foster esq. the Rev, Matthew Thomas Farrer and James Hammond esq. are chief landowners and lords of the manor, The soil is loam; subsoil, limestone and gravel. The land, is chiefly in pasture. The area is 17,257 acres; rateable value, £8,357; the population in 1861 was 417, and 1871, 916.

The Endowed schools were originally founded for about 50 scholars, by Mr. John Armistead, in 1725, &. endowed by him with 398 acres of land, now producing about £320 yearly, to which is added a Government grant of £70, & the children’s pence. In 1867 the school was further benefited by the erection of a master’s house at the expense of Mr. C. J. Geldard, & in 1879 new buildings were opened at Selside for 420 scholars. The schools are under Government inspection; William Darley, master; Miss Margaret Leeming, mistress.
