Historical Description
HOVINGHAM is a parish, township and formerly a market town, with a station on the Thirsk and Malton branch of the North Eastern railway, and is 8 miles west-north-west from Malton and 8 south-east from Helmsley; it is in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, wapentake of Ryedale, Malton union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of All Saints is an ancient edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western tower, partly of Norman date, and containing a clock and 6 bells, hung in 1878 by public subscription at a cost of £600: built into the exterior south wall of the tower is a large oblong stone, with eight figures in relief, representing the “Annunciation”; on the north side is a large mausoleum, the burying place of the Worsleys, and within the church are monuments to different members of the same family: on the north side of the chancel is an oak screen, presented by the late Sir W. C. Worsley bart. in 1878: the stained east window and the reredos were erected in 1899, as a memorial to the late Sir William Cayley Worsley bart. d. 1898: the church was rebuilt and enlarged in 1860 and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1700. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £213, including 13 acres of glebe, situated near Beverley, in the gift of Sir W. H. A. Worsley bart. J.P. and held since 1911 by the Rev. Francis Fleetwood Crombie M.A. of Keble College, Oxford. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels here. The cemetery, of 1 ½ acres, is at the north side of the village, the land having been given by the late Sir W. C. Worsley bart. in 1882: the cost of the inclosure was £350, and the management is in the hands of the vicar, who is the treasurer. There are charities of about £20 yearly, and four almshouses, erected in 1870 by Mrs. Worsley, for aged widows. The Graves and Arthington charity, for educational purposes, is valued at £5 16s. per annum. On the village green is a cross of stone, erected in 1899, to the memory of the late Sir William Cayley Worsley bart. d. 10 sept. 1897. About a mile from the village is the spa, which is much visited during the summer months by invalids; the waters are of a sulphur-sodaic character, and there is also a copious and very strong chalybeate spring, and one of pure rock water. The market once held here has been discontinued. The Hovingham Golf Club have a 9-hole course, which is open to visitors, introduced by members, upon the payment of a small fee. Hovingham Hall, the seat of Sir William Henry Arthington Worsley bart. J.P. is a handsome mansion of stone in the Italian style, built by and from the designs of Thomas Worsley esq. who held the office of surveyor-general of the Board of Works under George III. in 1750; it partakes more or less of the style of the Pitti Palace of Florence, but has a marked resemblance to the Horse Guards building in London, also erected from the designs of Mr. Worsley, about the same date, though somewhat earlier in the 18th century, and consists of one principal block, with a pedimented centre, and a gabled north wing, the lower story of the west front being relieved by an arcading of rusticated arches: eastward of the house is a spacious covered riding school, opening to the village street by a pedimented archway of stone, bearing the motto “Virtug in actions constitit”; the house and attached buildings occupy the site of a Roman villa, and many remains have been discovered: about 1740 a Roman sudatory bath and a tesselated pavement were uncovered, various coins, some of which belonged to the reign of Antoninus Pius (A.D. 138—161), as well as broken urns, being met with: this was probably the villa of some chief officer of the VI. legion, the principal station of which for centuries was at York. King George III. who was a great personal friend of the Thomas Worsley named above, presented him with a colossal group, by Giovanni of Bologna, of “samson slaying a Philistine with the jaw bone of an ass”; this group, originally placed in the Royal Collection at Madrid, was given to Charles I. when Prince of Wales, on his leaving Spain in 1623 after his fruitless journey with the Marquis of Buckingham respecting his marriage with the Infanta: the group subsequently passed into the possession of the Duke of Buckingham, again becoming a royal possession at Buckingham Palace, under the Georges, until its presentation to Thomas Worsley esq.: a leaden cast of this group, placed in the centre of the quadrangle of Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1727, was removed in 1881: the mansion contains a good library of ancient and modern books and many interesting pictures, including a fine “Holy Family,” by Palma Vecchio, and a specially good “Cleopatra,” by Guercino. Some beautiful water colours by Copley Fielding R.A. and other masters of the older water colour school, such as Varley and Cotman: the park extends over an area of 200 acres. Sir W. H. A. Worsley bart. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clay and limestone; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, with some pasturage. Area of the township 2,853 acres of land and 6 of water; rateable value, £3,512; the population in 1911 was 496 in the township, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 976.
