Historical Description

HUGGATE is a parish, township and village, on the Wolds, 5 miles north-east from Wetwang station on the Malton and Driffield branch of the North Eastern railway, 7 ½ north-east from Pocklington, 10 north from Market Weighton and 10 west from Driffield, in the How-denshire division of the Riding, Wilton Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, Wilton Beacon petty sessional division, Pocklington union and county court district, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Mary, rebuilt in, 1864, is an edifice of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, porch and an embattled western tower, with spire, containing 2 bells: the stained east window is a memorial to James Cristie esq.: the west window was erected in 1911 by M. E. Holtby esq. of Hay Wold, to the memory of his wife, who died 1910: the reading desk and lectern were presented anonymously: there are 250 sittings. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £435, including 335 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1900 by the Rev. Thomas Waldon Jones B.A. of Durham University. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels. Mrs. Barker’s charity of £3 is paid out of the estate of Thomas Jessop esq. and Wood’s dole of 5s. out of the Kilnwick Percy estate. Adjoining Wold House are numerous lines of entrenchments; there are also several barrows. Thomas Jessop esq. of North Carlton, Worksop, who is lord of the manor. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, Mrs. Duncombe-Anderson, of Lea Hall, Gainsborough, and Hemsworth Hospital, W. Yorks, are the principal landowners. Howold is a separate manor, containing 1,030 acres, the rights of which are held by Mrs. Duncombe-Anderson, and the manor, is almost entirely exempt from tithe. The soil is chalk and flint; subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 7,006 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £4,231; the population in 1911 was 462.
