Historical Description

HUMBLETON is a parish, township and village, seated in an undulating and well-wooded country, 5 miles north-east-by-north from Hedon station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, and 9 ½ north-east from Hull, in the Holderness division of the Riding, middle division of the wapentake of Holderness, Middle Holderness petty sessional division, union of Skirlaugh, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, vestry and a fine embattled western tower containing 3 bells: the central light of the east window is occupied by a copy of Raphael’s famous painting of the “Transfiguration,” presented to the church in 1816 by Miss Ann Dixon, daughter of the then vicar: the church, with the exception of the chancel, was completely restored in 1888-9, at a cost of about £1,500, and the chancel in 1906, at the cost of Lord Hotham: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1577. The living is a discharged vicarage, with the chapelry of Elsternwick annexed, net yearly value £209, including 39 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1902 by the Rev. John George Patrick, jun. of St. Bees & University College, Durham. The impropriate tithe of the township amounts to £75. The vicar receives £1 annually for preaching a sermon in the church once a year under the will of Francis Heron, 1718. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel here, erected in 1860. Lord Hotham is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, beans, oats, seeds and barley. The population of the township in 1911 was 137; the area is 1,477 acres of land and 1 of water; rateable value, £1,641; the population of the entire parish in 1911 was 500.

Endowed (Church of England), Humbleton (mixed), erected in 1878, for 121 children; average attendance, 91; attached to the school is an endowment of about £80 yearly, arising from 50 acres of land at Flinton, bequeathed in 1718 by Francis Heron, for the educating & for scholarships for the children of this parish.
