Historical Description

HUNSINGORE is a village, township and parish, 4 ½ miles north-east from Wetherby and 7 south-east from Knaresborough, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of the wapentake of Claro, Great Ouseburn union, Knaresborough county court district, Boroughbridge rural deanery, Richmond archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon. The parish consists of the townships of Honsingore, Cattal Magna and Walshford with Great Ribston, all situated on the river Nidd. The nearest railway station is Allerton, on the North Eastern line, 2 miles north-west-by-north. The church of St. John the Baptist, erected in 1868, at a cost of upwards of £5,000, is a handsome stone structure situate on an eminence, and forms a conspicuous object; it is in the Geometric Decorated style, and consists of apsidal chancel, nave, south aisle, porch, vestry and baptistery underneath the tower, at the west end of the aisle; the tower has a peal of 6 bells and, with the spire, reaches a height of 120 feet, the church was built mainly at the expense of the late Joseph Dent esq. the patron of the living, from the designs of Charles Kirk esq.: the chancel is laid with encaustic tiles, and fitted with choir stalls, and on the north with an organ, built at a cost of £300: the east end contains five two-light windows, representing the life of our Lord, and there are two other stained windows in the chancel to the Elsworth and Atkinson families, dated 1872 and 1877 respectively; the aisle contains three stained windows to the family of Wood, dated 1872 to 1879: in the bapistery are two stained windows: the west window was erected by the children of Joseph Dent esq. in memory of their father, the founder of the church: in the nave is a tablet to the memory of Sir Henry James Goodricke, seventh baronet of Ribaton Hall, and the last of that family (1797—1833). Tha register dates from the year 1626, and is complete and in good preservation. The living is a vicarage, of which the great tithes are commuted at £260 and the small tithes at £160 a year, in the gift of John, Dent Dent esq. and held by the Rev. Joseph J. D. Dent M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. John D. Dent esq. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is mixed gravel; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. Hunsingore township contains 1,159 acres; rateable value, £2,081 5s. 6d.; population in 1871, 187; the area of the parish, 4,215 acres; population in 1871, 545.
