Historical Description

HUNTINGTON is a township and parish half a mile from Earswick station on the York and Market Weight-on branch of the North Eastern railway: the township includes the villages of East and West Huntington; the parish includes within its limits also the townships of Earswick and Towthorpe and is in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, petty sessional division of Bulmer East, York union and county court district, rural deanery of Easingwold, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York: the village of Hantington is on the east and west banks of the Foss (whence the names East and West), and 3 miles north-north-east from York. There was a church here with a priest before the Norman conquest: the church belonged, in the first instance, to the Abbey of Evesham, Worcestershire, then came into possession of St. Hilda’s Abbey, Whitby, and finally, in 1353, into the possession of the sub-Chanter and Vicars-Choral of York Cathedral, who are still its patrons. The present church of All Saints, standing apart from the village, on the west bank of the Foss, is a small and ancient building of stone and brick, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a south-west tower, with spire, containing 6 bells: the oldest portion of the fabric is a semi-Norman arch within the south porch: the pulpit, dating from about 1677, is handsomely carved and has at the base the text, “Where there is no vision the people perish” (Prov, chap. xxix. v. 18); there are three sedilia in the chancel: the church was restored and 4 bells added in 1874 at a cost of £2,700, when a new nave, north aisle and tower were built and an addition made to the chancel, and additional works were carried out in 1888 at a further cost of £784: the east window and four others are stained, and include one to a former vicar. An organ was presented by Mrs. William Driffield, in 1896, in memory of her husband; in the churchyard is an ancient stone cross, restored by the late vicar. The register dates from the year 1592. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £175, including 29 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the sub-Chanter and Vicars-Choral of York, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Edwin Storrs Fox M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The great tithe, amounting to £308, is appropriated to the sub-Chanter and Vicars-Choral of York; the lord of the manor is lessee of the great tithes and repairs the chancel.
