Towthorpe History

TOWTHORPE is a small township and village, situated near the east bank of the river Foss, 4 ½ miles north-north-east from York and 1 south from Strensall station. The Queen’s Parade and Officers’ Quarters, forming part of the camp at Strensall, are in this township. Riley Briggs esq. of Osgodby Hall, is lord of the manor and owner of the soil. The area is 1,071 acres of land and 4 of water; rateable value, £2,252; the population in 1911 was 490, including 405 military and 23 other inmates in Strensall Hut Barracks.
