Historical Description

HUTTON BUSCEL, or Hutton Bushel, is a parish, township and village, standing on a hill, three-quarters of a mile east from Wykeham station on the Pickering and Seamer branch of the North Eastern railway and 6 miles south-west from Scarborough, in the Whitby division of the Riding, wapentake of Pickering Lythe, petty sessional division of Pickering Lythe East, Scarborough union and county court district, rural deanery of Malton, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Matthew is a building of stone in the Transitional and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of three bays, aisles, south porch, an embattled western tower, containing 3 bells, and a bell-cot in the nave gable: the nave is embattled and the porch has a stepped gable: the tower, which is lighted only in the belfry stage, was partially destroyed by lightning, March 4th, 1902: it has since been repaired, and the bells rehung and recast, at a cost of £500: there are several memorial windows, and in the church is a monument to Richard Osbaldeston, Bishop of Carlisle, 1747, and London, 1762, who died in 1764; the beautiful oak reredos, erected in 1882, is a memorial to the Rev. Thomas Hutton Croft M.A. 47 years vicar, who died in 1873: the church was restored in 1854 by the late Viscount Downe, and in 1895 a new organ was provided: there are 240 sittings. The churchyard, enlarged in 1890 by the addition of about an acre of land, given by the late Viscountess Downe, is beautifully laid out with flower beds and shrubs and at the entrance is a lych gate, erected as a memorial to Mrs. Little (d. 1890), wife of the Rev. Thomas Gurney Little, vicar: in the churchyard are the remains of an ancient cross. The register dates from the year 1537. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £365, including 220 acres of glebe, in the gift of Earl Fitzwilliam, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Thomas Gurney Little M.A. of St. Piter’s College, Cambridge, and surrogate and J.P. N. R. Yorks. There is a small Wesleyan chapel here. Capt. the Hon. John Dawnay D.S.O. of Wykeham, is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is gravel; subsoil, gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, potatoes and turnips. The area of the township is 3,762 acres; rateable value, £2,977; the population of the township in 1911 was 378, ecclesiastical parish, 799.
