Historical Description
HUTTON CRANSWICK is a township, including the villages of Hutton and Cranswick, with a station in the village of Cranswick, and one mile south from Hutton, on the Hull and Scarborough branch of the North Eastern railway, 3 ½ miles south-west from Driffield, 15 ½ south-west from Bridlington, 39 from Scarborough and in the neighbourhood of the river Hull, which forms the boundary on the west about three miles from the village. Hutton Cranswick with the small townships of Rotsea and Sunderlandwick forms a parish in the Buckrose division of the Riding, Bainton Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, Bainton Beacon petty sessional division, Driffield union and county court district, rural deanery of Harthill, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Peter, in the township of Hutton, is an ancient building of stone, occupying the site of a pre-Norman structure mentioned in Domesday, and dedicated to St. Andrew; the existing church is in the Norman, Transition and Early English styles, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, transept, south porch, and a massive embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells: the stained east window was presented in 1876 by the ladies of the parish, at a cost of over £160: there is also in the chancel a memorial window erected by the late E. H. Reynard esq. to his son, Lieut. Charles R. Reynard; and another to the late Mrs. Reynard d. 1891; and another to Edward Horner Reynard esq. of Sunderlandwick, d. 1883, besides various monuments to this family: the south aisle retains a piscina and an aumbry, and the remains of a tomb, perhaps that of the founder: the font was presented by Mrs. R. Reynard, in place of an ancient carved stone font, believed to be Saxon, and now in the museum of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society at York: the church, with the exception of the tower, was restored in 1875-6, at a cost of over £3,000, and affords 260 sittings: the churchyard was enlarged in 1907 at a cost of £130. The register dates from the year 1646. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £200, including 46 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1906 by the Rev. Robert Warner Wheatley B.A. of Durham University, who is also vicar of Skerne. The vicarage house was erected at the sole cost of the patron in 1874. The tithe amounts to £182, of which the greater part is derived from the township of Rotsea in this parish, and is impropriated. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1860. There are charities of £7 10s. yearly value. Lord Hotham and the Earl of Londesborough K.C.V.O. are lords of the manor, and Frederick Reynard esq. D.L., J.P. of Sunderlandwick Hall, is the principal landowner. The soil is mostly gravel and clay; the subsoil, chalk. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley and turnips. The area of the township is 4,738 acres of land and 3 of water; rateable value, £6,633; the population in 1911 was 967 in the township, and 1,090 in the parish.
Public Elementary School, Cranswick (mixed & infants), erected in 1875 & enlarged in 1888, for 180 children; average attendance, 150 mixed & 56 infants.
