Historical Description

HUTTONS AMBO is a parish, comprising the villages of High and Low Hutton, with a station on the York, Whitby and Scarborough branch of the North Eastern railway; it is in Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Bulmer wapentake, Malton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Bulmer, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. High Hutton is 3 miles south-by-west from Malton. South of the railway are fine woods, and the Derwent, which the line crosses at this point, is sufficiently wide for boating. The church of St. Margaret is a building of stone, erected in 1856, at a cost of about £1,500, raised principally by subscription, and consists of chance], nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 2 bells: it has been restored, and an organ erected, together with several stained windows, all at the cost of the late Miss Starkey: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1714. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £230, including 129 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1912 by the Rev. Charles Thomas Duffin. There is a Wesleyan chapel at High Hutton, and a Primitive Methodist chapel at Low Hutton. Huttons Ambo Hall is the residence of Reginald William Lund esq. Mrs. Mary Kathleen Starkey is lady of the manor. The Hon. F. H. Dawnay and Sir Alexander Wentworth Macdonald Bosville-Macdonald bart. of Thorpe Hall, Rudston, are the principal landowners. The soil is limestone, sand, clay and loam; subsoil, loam. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, turnips, potatoes and clover. The area is 2,876 acres of land and 23 of water; rateable value, £5,994; the population in 1911 was 402.

Public Elementary school (mixed), was enlarged in 1893, for 69 children, the cost defrayed at the expense of the principal landowners; average attendance, 65.
