Historical Description

IDLE is a township and extensive clothing village and ecclesiastical parish formed out of the parish of Calverley in 1878, polling-place for the Northern division of the Riding, union of North Bierley, wapentake of Morley, Bradford petty sessional division, county court district and rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven, diocese of Ripon, situated near the river Aire, 9 miles north-west from Leeds, and 3 north from Bradford. Here is a station on the Great Northern railway. The church of the Holy Trinity is a spacious stone structure, in the Later English style, built in 1830, and consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, and square embattled tower, crowned with pinnacles, and containing 1 bell; the church has three stained windows, and an organ. Divine worship was formerly celebrated in a building now used as a school-room, known as the old chapel; the present building dates from the year 1637; there has been a place of worship on this site from time immemorial. The register dates from the year 1788. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £350, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Calverley and held by the Rev. Henry Harrison, of Durham University. There are in the township, Congregational, Baptist, Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Unitarian chapels. Fairs are held on the first Wednesday in April and second Wednesday in Oct. for cattle. The woollen-cloth manufacture is carried on to a considerable extent here. There are several quarries and brickfields. A local Board of Health was established here in 1864; the meetings are held at the Odd Fellows' Hall. There is a Mechanics’ Institute, also a Church Institute, both are well supplied with newspapers, periodicals and books, also a Wesleyan Institute; in connection with the former, classes are formed for technical education approved and in union with south Kensington, London. The charities amount to £8 16s. yearly. Colonel W. H. Crompton-Stansfield J.P. is lord of the manor and chief land owner. The soil is light; subsoil, gravel and stone. The chief crops are grass and pasture. The area is 2,462 acres; rateable value £40,144; and the population in 1861 was 9,155, and in 1871, including Windhill, 12,036; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 1,508 acres; population in 1871, 5,830.
