Historical Description
INGLETON is a township in the parish of Bentham and village and railway station, about 18 miles north-east from Lancaster, 10 north-west from settle and 7 south-east from Kirkby Lonsdale, in the Northern division of the Riding, Settle union, Ewcross petty sessional division, western division of the Staincliffe and Ewcross wapentake, in the county court district of Kirkby Lonsdale, rural deanery of Clapham, archdeaconry of Richmond, diocese of Ripon and province of York. In 1859 a viaduct was built here over the river Greta for the Ingleton branch of the North Western railway, which is 800 feet in length and 27 in breadth and consists of 1,100 cubic yards of ashlar stone. The township is divided into two ecclesiastical parishes, viz. Ingleton and Chapel-le-Dale or Ingleton Fells. The church of St. Mary, Ingleton, is an old stone building on the site of an earlier church erected, probably, in the twelfth century, and consists of nave, aisles and tower with 6 bells: the church contains a fine Norman font, and has several stained windows: it was repaired in 1743. The register dates from the year 1607 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £183, in the gift of the rector of Bentham and held by the Rev. Charles Reay Pughe M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. Here is a chapel for Wesleyans. The charities are £4 13s. yearly. The village is supplied with gas. There is a colliery, employing about 60 persons. Here is a police station, with court house and residence for superintendent, in which petty sessions are held. Messrs. Hornby, of Liverpool are lords of the manor of Ingleton. John Seddon esq. is lord of the manor of Twisleton. The principal landowners are Mrs. Greenwood, Rev. John Tinkler, John Seddon and Rev. Matthew Thomas Farrer. The soil is sand and gravel; subsoil, limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area of the township is 17,508 acres; rateable value, £11,586; and the population in 1861 was 1,247; 1871, 2,541.

Chapel-le-Dale or Ingleton Fells is one of two ecclesiastical parishes which together constitute the township of Ingleton, formed in 1864 from the parish of Bentham, situated 4 miles north-east from Ingleton, in a romantic valley, between Ingleboro’ and Whernside, abounding with caves and beautiful waterfalls: Weathercote cave in particular has a fall of 73 feet, from which the stream runs underground for a mile and a half and reappearing at “God’s Bridge,” forms the head of the river Greta. Two miles north-east is a station on the settle and Carlisle branch of the Midland railway, called Ribhlehead. The church, an ancient building, consists of nave only and a turret containing 1 bell; it has been thoroughly restored, and for attractiveness holds a foremost position among the mountain churches of Yorkshire. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £122, with house, in the gift of the rector of Bentham, and held by the Rev. Alfred Relton M.A. of Magdalene College, Cambridge. The area is 10,435 acres; the population in 1871 was 1,125, but this was only temporary; the resident population is about 240.
