Historical Description

KELLINGTON is an extensive parish, including the townships of Beal, with Kellingley, Whitley, High and Low Eggborough, with Hutt Green and Roall, in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of Osgoldcross wapentake, Pontefract union and county court district, rural deanery of Pontefract, and diocese and archdeaconry of York, bounded on the north by the river Aire. For ecclesiastical purposes only Beal is in Birkin parish, and High Eggborough in Hensall parish. Kellington is a mile from Whitley Bridge station on the Wakefield and Goole branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 6 miles north-east from Pontefract, 6 north-west from Snaith and 6 south-west from Selby. The church of St. Edmund is an ancient stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north transept, and a tower with 3 bells; it was thoroughly restored in 1870 at a cost of £3,000, newly seated with open benches and a handsome stone pulpit erected. The register dates from the year 1706, with the exception of one entry in 1650, and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £370, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. Joseph Mann M.A. late fellow of that college. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. Earl Cathcart, who is lord of the manor, and Samuel Hirst esq. are the principal landowners, but there are several small proprietors. Roall, a very picturesque old house, with the remains of a handsome gateway, for many years the residence of a branch of the family of Earnshaw of Whitley, is now a farm house, one mile east from Kellington. The soil is a light sandy loam, noted for turnips and potatoes and its excellent quality of malting barley. The area of the township is 1,761 acres; rateable value, £3,124; and the population in 1871 was 305: the area of the parish is 7,490 acres, and the population in 1871 was 1,357.

School Board, Edwin Lawson, clerk. Board schools with house for the master were erected here in 1877 for Whitley & High & Low Eggborough; (mixed), Henry smith, master; Mrs. Henry smith, sewing mistress.
