Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
KEYINGHAM is a parish, township and pleasant village with a station on the Hull and Withernsea branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 miles south-east from Hedon, 5 north-west from Patrington and 9 ½ east-by-south from Hull, in the Holderness division of the Riding, south division of the wapentake of Holderness, South Holderness petty sessional division, Patrington union, county court district of Hedon, rural deanery of Hedon, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Nicholas is a building of rubble in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, with a chantry chapel, south porch and a western tower with a broach spire containing 3 bells: there are several mural tablets and two piscinae, and near the pulpit is an hour-glass frame, supposed to date from the Reformation: the chancel was restored in 1885, and the remainder of the church in 1890-93, at a total cost of £1,500: there are about 200 sittings. In the churchyard is an ancient cross, formerly standing on the property of E. T. Oldfield esq. but removed here in 1888. The register dates from the year 1604. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £256, including 33 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Jeremiah Sharp Thomlinson B.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. The vicarage house was built in 1879. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are owners of the great tithes, £407, and also of the Rectory farm. There is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1,848, and a primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1846, and another, erected in 1909, to seat 170 persons. The Friendly Society’s hall, erected in 1857, is used for lectures and public meetings and will hold 300 persons. The local lodge of Foresters hold a court here periodically. The Ombler and Marriott charity of about £22 yearly, left for educational purposes, is now applied to the augmentation of the school funds generally. Keyingham Creek, which formerly extended nearly to Salthaugh and once divided the parish of Keyingham from Sunk Island, is now partially warped up. On the Oldfield estate is the base of an ancient cross which formerly stood near the “Watt’s Arms,” Ottringham; in the centre of the village is the base of another cross, and at Ebor house are remains of a third, said to have been brought from St. Philip’s Cross farm. There is one corn mill. Salthaugh Grange, formerly used as a storehouse for ammunition when Ravenspurne, one of the lost towns on the Humber, was in existence, is now a farmhouse, occupied by Mr. Herbert A L. Francis. Major Walter George Raleigh Chichester-Constable D.L., J.P. of Burton Constable, who is Cord of the manor, the trustees of the late Daniel Brown, the Trustees of the Charity for the Sons of the Clergy, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Henry Broadley Harrison-Broadley esq. M.P., J.P. of Welton, and Messrs. G. and M. S. Meadley, of Sunk Island, are the chief landowners. The soil is marly play, sand and gravel; in the low marshes it is a deep warp clay; the subsoil is clay and gravel. The chief crops are, on sand land, turnips, barley, mustard and wheat; on strong land, wheat, seeds, clover, oats and beans. The area is 3,544 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £5,066; the population in 1911 was 547.
