Historical Description

KILBURN is a township, parish and village, 2 miles north from Coxwold station on the Thirsk and Malton branch of the North Eastern railway, and 6 south-east from Thirsk, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, Birdforth wapentake and petty sessional division, Thirsk union and county court district, rural deanery of Thirsk, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York.

The church of St. Mary is a building of stone, with some portions of Norman work, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and an embattled western tower, containing 2 bells: the church was restored in 1874, at a cost of £779, and affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1600. The living age, net yearly value £300, with residence in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1879 by the Rev. Ralph Prowde M.A. of the University of Durham. The tithe, amounting to £407, is assigned to the Archbishop of York and lessees. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1838, with sittings for 300 persons. A portion of the Old Hall, built in the 15th century by the ancestors of the Baynes family, is still standing. Hoode, or Hode Grange, was formerly an Austin priory founded here by Adam Fossard, and until 1143 was a cell to the Abbey of Newburgh, but in that year a party of monks who had seceded from the brotherhood at Furness Abbey, in Lancashire, halting here to rest on their way to York to represent their grievances, were induced to remain in the neighbourhood, and subsequently founded Byland Abbey: the walls of the ancient church are yet standing, and form part of a barn: two stone coffins were found here many years ago, one is now built upright into the barn wall: an ancient stone font of curious workmanship was also dug up; it had a square base, and four grotesque figures supporting the angles. On the steep side of a hill here is the figure of a large white horse, cut in the turf in 1857; the total length is 180 feet, and height 80 feet, and it covers a space of 3 roods. The Archbishop of York is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The soil is clay and gravel; the subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and oats. The acreage of the township is 2,809; rateable value, £2,092; the population in 1911 was 276 in the township and 510 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary school, Kilburn, erected in 1847, by Dr. Edward Vernon-Harcourt, Archbishop of York, for 100 children; average attendance, 49.
