Oldstead History

OLDSTEAD is a township and village in the parish of Kilburn, Helmsley union and county court district, 2 miles north-east from the church and 8 south-west from Helmsley and 2 north from Coxwold station. The tithe, amounting to £145, is assigned to the Archbishop of York. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1868, and seating 150 persons. On a lofty height here is a stone building called “The Observatory, erected by the late John Wormald esq. to commemorate the coronation of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, 28 June, 1838. William Warcop Peter Consett esq. and Sir George Orby Wombwell bart. of Newburgh Priory, are the chief landowners. The soils are limestone, clay and gravel. The chief crops are barley, wheat and turnips. The acreage is 1,384; rateable value, £943; the population in 1911 was 101.
