Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
KILDALE is a civil parish, and village, on the river Leven, with a station on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland section of the North Eastern railway, and is 6 miles east from Stokesley and 6 south from Guisborough, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, union and county court district of Stokesley, western division of Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Langbaurgh West, rural deanery of Stokesley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Cuthbert, entirely rebuilt in 1868, at the expense of the trustee to the Kildale estate, aided by private subscriptions, is an edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western tower, with a low spire, containing one bell: in pulling down the old church several gravestones were found bearing the arms of the Percys, formerly lords of the manor, the carving being very sharp, but the inscriptions illegible; these stones were in 1888 standing in the porch: many weapons, such as swords and daggers, one of which appears to be Danish, were also found indigging the foundations of the new church: a new organ was erected in 1888: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1710 The living is a rectory net yearly value £136, including 38 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Major R. B. Turton J.P. and held since 1884 by the Rev. Lewis Pawson L.th, of the University of Durham. Over the door of the rectory, on a stone, is inscribed “T. C. Rector, A.D. 1691”; being the date of its repair by the Rev Thomas Robert Clarke M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge rector here 1667—1708 and of Kirkby Sigston from 1675 to 1708. There are charities left by Joseph Dunn esq. yearly value 20s. Kildale Hall is the property and residence of Major Robert Bell Turton J.P. Kildale was given by William the Norman to William de Percy, one of his followers, in 1066, and the Percys remained here until about 1315, when they moved to Alnwick, although they retained the property here. During the reign of Charles I. Kildale was purchased by a city merchant, named Turner, in whose family it remained until 1810, when it was purchased by Robert Bell, who took the name of Livesey in addition to his own name and built the present hall, which descended to his only daughter Marianne, wife of Edmund Turton esq. M.P. of Brasted Park, Kent: Major R B. Turton J.P. the present owner of the manor and estate, is grandson of the above, and second son of the late Edmund Henry Turton esq. (d. July, 1896) and Lady Cecilia Turton, of Upsall Castle. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are barley and oats. The area is 5,195 acres; rateable value, £2,382; the population in 1911 was 220.
