Historical Description
The church of Kildwick is one of the two in the whole Deanery of Craven which are mentioned in Doomsday. The fabric of the church, however, appears to have been almost entirely renewed in the reign of Henry VIII. The choir is extended to an unusual length, from which circumstance it has acquired with the vulgar, the name of the Lang Kirk in Craven. In the windows are considerable remains of painted glass. In the present nave, but on the north side of the original choir, are the tomb and cumbent statue of Sir Robert de Steeton, in link-mail, with his arms upon his shield. The statue is an exact counterpart of that of his contemporary Sir Adam de Middleton, at Ilkly, and as both are wrought in Haselwood stone, of which York cathedral is built, Dr. Whitaker supposes they were executed at that place.
The bridge of Kildwick was built by the canons of Bolton, in the reign of Edward II.
At Kildwick we pass under an aqueduct of the Leeds canal.
KILDWICK, situated on the river Aire, is a parish containing seven townships (three of which are separate ecclesiastical parishes), 4 miles south-east from Skipton and 5 north-west from Keighley; it is a polling place for the Northern division of the Riding, in the east division of Staincliffe and Ewcross wapentake Skipton union, petty-sessional division and county court district, south Craven rural deanery, Craven archdeaconry and Ripon diocese. The railway station, on the Midland Extension railway is a quarter of a mile from the village. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, and is known as the “lang kirk of Craven,” being 145 ½ feet in length and 48 ½ feet wide, including a nave of six bays 18 ½ feet wide and a chancel of four bays: it consists generally of chancel, nave, aisles, porch and has 6 bells and an ancient open oak roof; the stained east window was erected in memory of three of his children, by William Bradley Wainman esq. of Carhead; the west window is a memorial to the Rev. Henry Currer Wilson; there are also many other similas memorials, with ancient shields from Fountains Abbey, Bolton Abbey and others of the Cliffords and Rycrofts who left charities to the parish; there is, besides, a very interesting monument of Sir Robert De Styveten, a Knight Templar of the 14th century. The register dates from the year 1575 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £420 with residence, in the gift of Christ Church, Oxford and held by the Rev. Frederick Waters Greenstreet M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Rycroft Charity in of £14 yearly value, left by Master John Rycroft. Kildwick Hall, the residence of John Robert Tennant esq. J.P. is an ancient stone building in the Elizabethan style, standing on the brow of the hill above the church and village, and commanding a fine and extensive view of the district; the ancient timber of the hall, and terrace walk with a building at the end similar in character to that of the hall, the gates with wide flight of steps and life-size figures of lions, the terraced garden and fountain, give the place a pleasant air of antiquity: the original house was built in 1635 and the present frontage added to it a century afterwards. The property belonged to the Currers, who resided here for many generations, and now belongs to Sir Matthew Wilson bart. M.P. of Eshton Hall, who inherited it from his sister-in-law, Miss Richardson Currer. Sir Matthew Wilson bart. of Eshton Hall, near Gargrave, is lord of the manor and principal landowner; he owns also the whole village of Kildwick. The soil is clay and sand; subsoil various. The land is chiefly pasture. The population of the township in 1871 was 161; and the area is 871 acres; rateable value, £1,292; the area of the entire parish is 22,537 acres; and it contained a population in 1871 of 11,717.
