Historical Description

Kilham, eight miles from Bridlington, is an ancient market-town, situated in a pleasant and fertile valley, at the south-east declivity of the Wolds, and very near the flat country called Holderness. The grounds in the parish (except an extensive portion called Swathorpe, belonging to Sir Charles Hotham, Bart. of South Dalton), containing about 7000 acres, were enclosed in the year 1772, and are chiefly appropriated to tillage and sheep-walks. Grain and wool are the principal commodities of the parish; the former, amounting to a large quantity annually, is sold to corn-factors, and by them sent to London, or the West Riding of Yorkshire. The latter is chiefly sold to the woollen manufacturers of Leeds and Wakefield. The town is nearly a mile and a quarter long, running from east to west; not in one continued street, but where the first street ends another commences a little farther south, and runs to the western extremity. One branch of the river Hull rises here, the water of which is remarkably transparent and wholesome.

The church dedicated to All Saints is a very long, strong, stone structure; has one aisle, a large chancel, and a lofty tower; and upon the whole, seems to have been designed for containing a more numerous congregation than the present population of the parish can supply. The inhabitants retain a traditional notion, that it has (perhaps some hundred years ago), been far more populous and extensive than it is at present; which notion seems to be favoured by the many vestiges of buildings and sites of houses, within various parts of the old enclosures, from one end of the place to the other.

The Free Grammar School in this town was founded by John Lord D’Arcy, of Aston, in this county, in the ninth year of the reign of Charles I. with appointments for a master and usher.

During the usurpation of Cromwell, banns of marriage for this and the neighbouring parishes were published in the market-place, three several market days, according to act of parliament, and the marriages' were solemnized before the neighbouring justices of the peace.

In this parish there is a mineral spring, near the road leading to Rudston, said to be efficacious in curing certain disorders; and the vipsey or gipsey, that after a wet autumn breaks, out at a place called Henpit Hole, near the road to Langtoft. The violence of this spring or spout, when it first issues out of the ground, is said to be so great, that a man on horseback may ride under its arched stream.

There is a place called Dane’s Grave, a piece of ground at the north-west extremity of the lordship, marked with a great number of hillocks close to one another, traditionally said to be the burying-place of the Danes, when invading this country.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

KILHAM is a parish, township and village, 4 miles north-by-west from Lowthorpe station on the Hull and Bridlington section of the North Eastern railway, 6 north-north-east from Driffield and 10 west-south-west from Bridlington, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, Dickering wapentake, Bainton Beacon petty sessional division, union and county court district of Driffield, rural deanery of Buckrose, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The village is situated at the foot of the Wolds, and consists principally of one long straggling street, extending from east to west for about 1 ½ miles. The church of All Saints is a very ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a massive embattled western tower, containing a clock, placed in 1898 at a cost of £120, and 3 bells: the nave is part of the original building, but the chancel was restored in 1300: the south doorway is Norman, richly moulded and adorned with the chevron ornament: a new organ has been erected at a cost of £250: in the chancel are sedilia and a piscina and there are marble tablets to the Thompson, Outram, Anderson and Prickett families: the church was reseated in 1898 at a cost of £320, and affords 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £280, including 77 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1905 by the Rev. Henry Radcliffe Todd Jackson. The appropriate rectorial tithe amounts to £200, and belongs to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. There is a Baptist chapel, built in 1819, a Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1907, and a Primitive Methodist Chapel, erected in 1860. A cemetery of one acre was formed in 1885, at a cost of £160, and is under the centrol of the parish council. The Foresters’ hall, built in 1880, will hold 250 persons; attached is a small room, holding about 60 persons. The charities include the dividends arising from £85 1s. 8d. invested in Consols, left by Elizabeth Knowsley in 1800 and distributed annually, 24 widows receiving 2s. and six other poor persons 1s. each; there is also a sum of £5, left in 1745, by Elizabeth Thompson. In this parish is a mineral spring, much resorted to at one time for the cure of various diseases. The principal landowners are Thompson’s trustees, the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Mrs. John Johnson, who is lady of the manor.

Sir A. W. Legard bart. Joseph H. Oddy esq. of Cleckheaton, Brooke’s trustees, the trustees of Charles Boynton esq. and H. C. B. Wilson esq. of The Hall, Crofton. The soil is principally chalky; subsoil, chalk. The principal crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area is 8,174 acres of land and 2 of water; rateable value, £8,076; the population in 1911 was 959.

(1633) by John, 3rd baron D’Arcy of Aston, who endowed it with a yearly rent-charge of £30, on 200 acres of land in the parish, now the property of Mrs. Johnson, of Bridlington; it was formerly free for instruction in Latin & Greek to all the boys in the parish, but in April, 1902, was reorganised under a scheme approved by the Charity Commissioners. & is now managed by a committee of 9 governors.
