Historical Description

KIPPAX is a village and parish 2 miles south from Garforth railway station, 3 north from Castleford station, 8 east from Leeds and 6 north-west from Pontefract, in the Eastern division of the Riding, lower division of the wapentake of Skyrack, honor and county court district of Pontefract, Tadcaster union, Wakefield rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven and Ripon diocese. The Roman road called Ermine street passes through the parish. The church of St. Mary is a very old stone building, partly in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and embattled tower with four pinnacles, containing clock and 3 bells, the first dated 1636 and the others 1638; the pinnacles are time-worn, and the whole structure much dilapidated; the interior was restored in 1876, when two stained windows were placed in the church: in the chancel are several monuments to the Bland and Medhurst families; the font, a plain stone basin, bears date 1663. The register dates from the year 1539, and is in excellent condition. The living is a discharged vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, built in 1737, and about 80 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon and held by the Rev, Edward Davison Bland M.A. of Caius College, Cambridge, A vicarage was ordained here in 1410. Near the present board school stood the old school, erected and endowed in 1545 by the Rev. George Goldsmith. then vicar of Kippax, and for the support of which he left 3 cottages and 7 (since made 10) acres of land, at which school “8 free boys should be taught reading, writing and summing,” a provision which is now fulfilled by the board school. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have chapels here. Kippax Park, the seat of T. D. Bland esq. J.P. is an ancient mansion, containing much elegant stonework: it has an extensive frontage commanding fine views, and the park is well stocked with deer and, with the pleasure grounds, occupies 250 acres. Kippax Hall, the property of Edgar Breffitt esq. now (1881) being rebuilt, is finely situated, overlooking the beautiful valley of the Aire, and commands a charming view of south and west Yorkshire; from the terrace in front of the house a view of 50 miles in extent may be seen, and on a clear day, at a still greater distance the Peak of Derbyshire: there are nearly 42 acres of pleasure grounds. Duffield House, the seat of George Ellerton esq. is a compact mansion of native stone, with dressings; from the parapet in front of this residence a very extensive view is obtained. Mrs. Medhurst is lady of the manor. The principal landowners are T, D. Bland esq. Mrs. Medhurst and Arthur Pawson esq. The soil is clay and limestone; subsoil, generally limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The population of the township in 1861 was 1,656 and in 1871 2,014; the area is 1,632 acres; rateable value, £5,837; the area of the parish in 3,885 acres, including Allerton Bywater; population, 4,154.

The Board school (for boys & girls) was erected in 1868 at a cost of £453, defrayed by subscription, and subsequently transferred to the school Board, and educates eight boys free. C. A. Phillips, Castleford, clerk to the school Board; Frederick Draper Munro, master; Mrs. Elizabeth Harding, mistress; Miss Mary Varley, infants’ mistress.

School, Little Preston, Frederick Jackson, master.
