Historical Description

KIRBY GRINDALYTHE is a parish, township and village, 9 miles south-east from Malton, 11 north-east from Driffield, and about 3 ½ north-east from Wharram station on the Malton and Driffield branch of the North Eastern railway, in the Buckrose division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Buckrose, Malton union and county court district, rural deanery of Buckrose, archdeaconry of the East Riding and diocese of York. The church of St. Andrew is an edifice of stone in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of Norman date, with spire erected in the 14th century and containing 3 bells: the chancel retains its original sedilia with shafts and carved capitals and a piscina: the reredos of marble and alabaster is exquisitely sculptured and there is a fine rood-screen of oak, surmounted by a Calvary group: the entire west wall of the church is adorned with mosaic work representing the “Ascension,” which, together with the brass eagle lectern, stained windows, and the fine marble pulpit, was the gift of Sir Tatton Sykes bart.: the font of stone is an exact reproduction of that now preserved in the tower: the church, with the exception of the tower, was rebuilt in 1878 from the designs of the late G, E. Street esq. R.A. by Sir Tatton Sykes bart. at a cost of £12,600, and affords sittings for 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1680. The living is a vicarage, formerly belonging to the Augustinian Abbey at Kirkham, net yearly value £200, including glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Tatton Sykes bart. and held since 1906 by the Rev. Arthur Charles Lay-bourn, of Ayerst Hall, Cambridge. The impropriate tithe of the township amounts to £24. There is a Wesleyan chapel. Sir Tatton Sykes bart. of Sledmere, who is lord of the manor, and the trustees of the late Sir Charles William Strickland, 8th bart. (d. 1909) are the principal landowners. The soil is light, with chalk and gravel, resting upon chalk wold; subsoil, various. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips and pasturage. The area of the township is 4,526 acres; rateable value, £3.563; the population in 1911 was 197 in the township and 411 in the parish.
