The church of St. Wilfrid, rebuilt in 1873—4 on the ancient site at the cost of £2,196, is an edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: there are 126 sittings. John Clarke Hanson LL.M. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. Newbuilding, the seat of George Stafford Thompson esq. lord of the manor and principal landowner, is a mansion pleasantly seated on an isolated knoll, surrounded by lofty plantations: though called” New,” it is a structure of considerable antiquity, having been purchased in 1653 from the Constable family by James Danby esq. who enlarged it: it was formerly styled “Kirby Knowle Castle,” and has some curious secret chambers.
