Historical Description

KIRBY HILL, or Kirby-on-the-Moor, is a parish comprising the townships of Kirby Hill, Langthorpe, and parts of Humburton, Marton-le-Moor, and Milby, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, wapentake of Gilling West, petty sessional division of Hallikeld, Thirsk union, Richmond county court district, rural deanery of Boroughbridge and archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon. The Great Northern road, Leeming Lane and the Northallerton road pass through this parish.

Kirby Hill is a small village on Leeming Lane and on the high road from Ripon to Boroughbridge, 1 mile north-north-west from Boroughbridge station on the Harrogate and Pilmoor section of the North Eastern railway and 5 south-east from Ripon. The church of All Saints, restored in 1869 at a cost of £2,600, is a building of stone with remains of Saxon and Norman work, but chiefly in mixed Gothic styles; it consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western tower with low spire covered with oak shingles, and containing 6 bells: in the base of the tower is a Roman altar: there are 150 sittings. The register dates from the year 1604. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £271, including 3 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1902 by the Rev. Henry Baugh M.A. of Queens’ College, Cambridge. The impropriate tithe amounts to £446. Viscount Mountgarret, of Nidd Hall, Ripley, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is sandy; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The area of the township is 1,213 acres; rateable value, £1,649; the population in 1911 was 141, and in the ecclesiastical parish, Kirby-on-the-Moor, 604.

Public Elementary school, Kirby Hill (mixed), erected in 1867, at a cost of nearly £800, for 110 children: average attendance, 101.
