KIRK DEIGHTON is a village and parish 1 ½ miles north from Wetherby, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of the wapentake of Claro, Wetherby union, Knaresborough county court district, Wetherby rural deanery, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon. The parish consists of the townships of Kirk Deighton and North Deighton, with the hamlet of Ingmanthorpe and part of Stockeld. The river Nidd forms part of the northern boundary of the parish. The church of All saints is an old stone fabric, partly in the Norman and partly in the Early English style, with a north wall possibly Saxon, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and a tower surmounted by a spire and containing a clock and 6 bells, put up by subscription in 1863; there is a handsome monument to the Rev. James W. Geldart LL.D, rector of this parish for 44 years, and a brass, dated 1656, to the memory of Richard Burton, also a former rector, with his figure in a mural recess, robed and in an attitude of prayer: there are two stained windows in memory of the Brewin family, of North Deighton, and also three windows in the chancel to that of Geldart; at the west end of the church are similas memorials to the family of Riadove, and others of the Geldarts: in the vestry there is a wooden commandment tablet given by one of the Roos family as a thanksgiving for his sate return from the invasion of France under King Henry VIII. it is dated 1576, and is curious from its orthography and its variation from the present version the old font, not now in use, is placed in the south aisle, a new one having been given by Mrs. W. R. Geldart: there remain also a few ancient stone coffin lids: the church was repaired in 1849, and further restored in 1872—4, chiefly at the expense of the late rector. The register dates from the year 1600 and is in very good condition. The living is a rectory, commuted at £753 12s. 8d. with a handsome residence and 76 acres of glebe, in the gift of and held by the Rev. James. William Geldart LL.M. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Sir Hugh Palliser left the sum of £1,000 in the south sea. Annuities, the interest for clothing and educating a certain number of Sunday scholars of the parish to be nominated, by the lord of the manor of North Deighton and the rector of the parish. The Thornton charity of £23 yearly is distributed among the deserving poor at the discretion of the Archbishop of York and the rector, and is also appropriated to the apprenticing of boys from this parish. Igmanthorpe Hall, the seat of Andrew Montagu esq. is pleasantly situated in a park of about 200 acres. The Rev. J. W. Geldart is lord of the manor. The principal landowner is Andrew Montagu esq. The soil is limey; subsoil, lime and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and grass. The area of the township is 2,274 acres; rateable value, £4,196; area of the parish, 3,869 acres. The population of the township in 1871 was 316; of the entire parish 410.

The Parochial & Sunday school was built in 1846 by the late rector, and is supported by his son, the present rector; Henry Woodbridge, master.
