Historical Description

CHURCH FENTON (or Kirk Fenton) is a village and parish, including the townships of Little Fenton and Biggin: it has a station on the North Eastern railway, 6 miles south-east from Tadcaster, 9 north-west from Selby, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of the wapentake of Barkstone Ash, Tadcaster union and county court district, rural deanery of Selby, and archdeaconry and diocese of York. Little Fenton and Biggin are in Selby union, but Tadcaster county court district. The church, supposed to have been originally dedicated to St. John the Baptist, since there is a figure of that saint on one of the bells, of pre-Reformation date, and is a cruciform structure, consisting of chancel, nave, north and south transepts and central tower containing 3 bells, the largest of which is as referred to above, the other two are dated respectively 1710 and 1793; there is a stone effigy of a female in the chancel, dated 1460: the church has been restored. The register dates from the year 1630, and is in fair condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value, £300, with a residence, erected in 1870—71, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held by the Rev. James Isaacson M.A. of St. John's College, Oxford. There is a chapel for Wesleyans. Lord Ashtown is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are J.J. Tufnell esq. and the Rev. Canon Bull. The chief crops are wheat, barley, teazles, and potatoes. The population of the township (1871) 490; and the area 1,973 acres; rateable value, £5,296: the area of Biggin is 724 acres; rateable value, £816; and the population (1871) 154. The population of the entire parish 733; and the area is 3,477 acres.
