Historical Description

KIRK LEVINGTON is a township, parish and village, 2 miles north-north-west from Picton station on the North Yorkshire and Cleveland branch of the North Eastern railway, a south-east from Yarm, 6 south-east from Stockton, in the Cleveland division of the Riding, West Langbaurgh liberty, petty sessional division of Yarm and union of Stokesley and Stockton county court district, rural deanery of Stokesley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. The church of St. Martin is an ancient building of stone in the Norman and Early English styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing 3 bells: the interior retains two Norman arches, with zigzag mouldings: the church was restored in 1883, at a cost of about £1,200, under the direction of Mr. Armfield, architect, of Whitby: during the progress of the work some Saxon remains were met with and have been carefully preserved: the church was re-opened on St. James’ day, July 25, 1883, by the Archbishop of York: the reredos, pulpit and lectern are of oak: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1734. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £295, including 30 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Archbishop of York, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Frederick Davies Brock M.A. of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. On the east of the village is the river Leven, which flows through a narrow picturesque dale. There is a charity of £5 yearly, formerly derived from land, which, however, was sold in 1898, and the money invested in Consols. William John Richardson esq. is the chief landowner. The soil is clayey upon red-stone. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans. The area of the township is 2,202 acres; rateable value £5,808; the population in 1911 was 189 in the township, and 386 in the ecclesiastical parish.

Public Elementary school, under the management of a committee of 6 members, who are under the control of the North Riding County Council, built in 1857, & has since been enlarged, for 40 children; average attendance, 18.

Low Worsall township, formerly in Kirk Levington parish, was in 1891 united to High Worsall, for ecclesiastical purposes.
