The church of St. Mary is an edifice of the Norman period, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and tower with 3 bells, dating from 1532: the chancel arch is a fine example of Norman work: the church was thoroughly restored in 1864, and an organ erected in 1875 by Miss Hicks. The register dates from the year 1658 and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £380, in the gift of Earl Fitzwilliam and held by the Rev. Robert Wood shepherd Hicks B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. A Sunday school is held at the National school-room and there is a reading-room supported by Miss Hicks. On the south bank of the Went, westward, are the remains of a Roman encampment. The land chiefly belongs to the Nevile family (lords of the manor), George Bateson Yarborough and Henry Perryn esqrs. and the rector. The soil is magnesian limestone; subsoil the same, mixed with sand and marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and potatoes. The area is 1,800 acres; rateable value £2,448; and the population in 1871, 341.
