Historical Description
KIRK SMEATON (or Smeaton Kirk) is a small, pleasant village and parish, 2 ½ miles south-west from Womersley station on a branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, from Knottingley to Doncaster, 6 south-east from Pontefract, in the Eastern division of the Riding, upper division of Osgoldcross wapentake, petty sessional division and county court district of Pontefract, Hemsworth union, rural deanery of Pontefract and archdeaconry and diocese of York; it is prettily and pleasantly situated on the top of a steep bank south of the river Went, looking westward up the valley on Brockerdale. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of the Norman period, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and tower with 3 bells, dating from 1532: the chancel arch is a fine example of Norman work: the church was thoroughly restored in 1864, and an organ erected in 1875 by Miss Hicks. The register dates from the year 1658 and is in good condition. The living is a rectory, yearly value £380, in the gift of Earl Fitzwilliam and held by the Rev. Robert Wood shepherd Hicks B.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. A Sunday school is held at the National school-room and there is a reading-room supported by Miss Hicks. On the south bank of the Went, westward, are the remains of a Roman encampment. The land chiefly belongs to the Nevile family (lords of the manor), George Bateson Yarborough and Henry Perryn esqrs. and the rector. The soil is magnesian limestone; subsoil the same, mixed with sand and marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips and potatoes. The area is 1,800 acres; rateable value £2,448; and the population in 1871, 341.
