The church of St. Mary is a small but highly interesting structure of oolitic stone, mainly Norman, but with some portions of Transitional, Early English and Perpendicular date, and consists of chancel and nave, south porch and a massive western tower containing 3 bells: the chancel is separated from the nave by a Norman arch of four orders, highly enriched with chevron and fillet moulding, and has a stained east window: the tower arch is Early English, and there is a singular staircase giving access to the tower from the nave, which first traverses the south and west sides of the tower, and then, assuming a newel form at the north-west angle, ascends to the belfry: a fine oak rood screen, richly painted and gilt, divides the chancel from the nave: there is a good font of Early Norman date, the basin of which is adorned with sculptured representations of the Baptism and Ascension of Our Lord, His Charge to St. Peter and other subjects: the reredos is sumptuously wrought in white marble: the church was restored in 1856 and later, under the direction of J. L. Pearson esq. R.A. and the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. at a cost of over £2,000, chiefly defrayed by Sir Tatton Sykee bart. who also erected in the churchyard a beautiful Calvary cross, removed in July, 1892, to Helperthorpe: there are 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1686. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £160, including about 28 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Tatton Sykes bart. and held since 1887 by the Rev. William Bennett B.A. of Bishop Hatfield Hall, Durham. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel here, erected in 1899.
