Historical Description

KIRKBY FLEETHAM is a civil parish, containing the villages of Fleetham and Great and Little Fencote. Kirkby Fleetham is 3 miles north from Leeming Lane station on the Northallerton and Hawes branch of the North Eastern railway, 5 north-by-east from Bedale and 9 south-east from Richomod, in the Richomod division of the Riding, Bedale union, wapentake and petty sessional division of East Hang, county court district of Northallerton, rural deanery of Catterick East, archdeaconry of Richomod and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south transept, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: there are memorial windows to the Rev. William Lockwood M.A. d. 1856; to the Rev. T. Charles Wilson, vicar, d. 1875; the Rev. John Shapland Elliott Cockburn-Hood M.A. vicar here 1875—1903; to Miss Hutton-Squire, of Holtby Hall; to John Taylor Elliott, d. 1891, and to Edward Philip Courage, d. 1909: the church was completely restored in 1872, and affords 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1590. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £192, including 3 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1903 by the Rev. Horace Rimington M.A. of St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge. Kirkby Hall, the seat of Edward Hubert Courage esq. J.P. is a modern mansion, standing in a well-timbered park of about 48 acres. The kennels of the Bedale Hunt are situated in this parish; J. J. Moubray is master. The pack hunts thrice weekly, and Bedale, Thirsk and Northallerton are convenient places for hunting visitors. Edward Hubert Courage esq. J.P. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. Here are remains of a castle. The soil is various; subsoil, gravel, sand and clay. The chief crops are wheat, beans, barley, root crops and a great quantity of pasture.

The area is 3,105 acres of land and 43 of water; rateable value, £4,347; the population in 1911 was 565.
