Historical Description

KIRKBY-IN-MALHAM-DALE (or Kirkby Malham) is a parish and village 6 miles south-east from settle and 10 north-west from Skipton, in the Northern division of the Riding, west division of Staincliffe and Ewcross wapentake, petty sessional division of West Staincliffe, Settle union and county court district, rural deanery of North Craven, Craven archdeaconry and diocese of Ripon, situated near the river Aire; the parish comprises the townships of Airton, Hanlith. Kirkby-in-Malham-Dale, Malham Moor, Otterburn and Scosthrop. The church of St. James built on the site of an older church, is an ancient edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, low square tower and 3 bells, dated respectively 1602, 1617 and 1785: the church has been restored by subscription, at a cost of £3,850, Walter Morrison esq. M.P. being the principal subscriber. The register dates from the year 1597 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, yearly value about £200, in the gift of Walter Morrison esq. J.P. and held by the Rev. Thomas Clark Henley, of St. Bees. The vicarage house was restored in 1866 at the cost of the patron. There are Wesleyan chapels at Malham and Scosthrop. There is a charity for the industrious poor of the parish, of £25 yearly value. A fair is held on 30th of June and loth of October yearly for sheep at Malham. Malham Cave, Gordale scar, Janet’s Cave and Malham Tarn, a lake covering 153 acres, are objects of interest in the neighbourhood. Walter Morrison esq. J.P. is lord of the manor. Walter Morrison esq. J.P. and George J. Serjeantson esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is gravel. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area of the township is 1,145 acres; rateable value £1,018; area of the parish 23,777 acres; the population of the township in 1861 was 128; (1871) 174; of the parish 930.

The Grammar school for boys & girls is endowed with £160 yearly, & a school-house, situated between Kirkby & Malham, has been built by Walter Morrison esq.
