Historical Description

KIRKBY MALZEARD is a parish, township and village and a polling place for the Eastern division of the Riding, 4 miles south from Masham and 7 north-west from Ripon, in the lower division of the wapentake of Claro, petty sessional division of Kirby Malzeard, county court district and union of Ripon, rural deanery of Mashatn, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. Andrew is a stone building, dating from about 1050, partly Early English, partly Norman, consisting of chancel, nave and north aisle with vestry and parvise over it, a tower containing 6 bells and a clock, an organ and a north gallery: there are also two fine stained memorial windows: in the churchyard is an ancient cross, the head of which has been restored; here is also a tombstone to the memory of George Wharton, who died at Laverton after attaining the extraordinary age of 112: the church has been restored at a cost of over £3,000. The register dates from the year 1653, and is in perfect condition. The living is a vicarage, with that of Masham annexed, joint yearly value £384, in the gift of Trinity College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. George Martyn Gorham M.A. formerly fellow of that college. Here is a Mechanics’ Institution, established in 1849, comprising reading and lecture rooms, with a library of 1,000 volumes. The chapel of the Methodist New Connexion has a good organ. There is also a Primitive Methodist chapel. The Marquis of Ripon is lord of the manor, and holds a court leet annually in June. The charities amount to about £80 yearly. The Marquis of Ripon, Thomas Richmond esq. David Richmond esq. T. C. Geld art esq. and Col. the Hon. A. M. Cathcart are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey, and the subsoil is clay and rock. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The population of the township in 1871 was 581; area, 3,303 acres; rateable value £4,086; and that of the parish £4,124; area 55,414.
