Historical Description

KIRKBY RAVENSWORTH, Kirby Hill, or Kirby-on-the-Hill, is a township, parish and village, 4 ½ miles north-west from Richomod railway station, in the Richomod division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of West Gilling, Richomod union and county court district and in the rural deanery of West Richmond, archdeaconry of Richomod and diocese of Ripon. The church of SS. Peter and Felix is an ancient building of stone, partly of Norman date, and stands on a considerable elevation: it consists of chancel, nave with clerestory, south porch and an embattled western tower, dating from 1397, with pinnacles and containing a clock and 2 bells: the east window is stained, and there are several others. The church was renovated in 1883, and in 1895 a carved oak chancel screen, prayer desk and pulpit were provided: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1599. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £300, including 199 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Ripon, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Lewis Arthur Drakeford-Lewis M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. Connected with the Grammar school endowment is an hospital for 24 aged persons of both sexes, to be elected from, those who were born in the parish, or have lived 10 years in it, being 70 years of age, or being afflicted with a continual disease; each inmate receives about 5s. per week, and there is also an allowance of five shillings per week each for 3 nurses who reside in the hospital, and whose duty it is to wait upon the inmates; the income from the endowment is at present upwards of £900 per annum. The Marquess of Zetland K.T., P.C. who is lord of the manor of Kirby Hill, and the Duke of Northumberland are the principal landowners. The soil is light loam; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and turnips. The township of Kirby Hill contains 250 acres; rateable value, £286; with a population in 1911 of 62. The parish consists of the townships of Kirby Hill, Whashton, Gayles, Ravensworth, Dalton, Newsham and New Forest; population of the parish in 1911, 944.
