Dalton History
DALTON is a township and village, 2 miles northwest from the church. The church of St. James, erected in 1898 at a cost of about £2,000, is an edifice in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and has a turret with one bell: it will seat about 120 persons. Here is a Wesleyan chapel. Col. Harry John Sowerby D.S.O. of Kings Walden, Herts, who is lord of the manor, the Duke of Northumberland and Ernest Brownless esq. are the chief landowners. The area is 2,708 acres; rateable value, £2,369; the population in 1911 was 184. Wall Letter Box, cleared at 2.15 p.m.
