The church of St. John the Baptist is a stone building, in the Early English style, with chancel, nave, north aisle under a distinct roof, south porch, small south aisle and fine massive embattled tower with four pinnacles and 3 bells, one of which bears the motto, “Jesus, be our speed,” with the date 1623: the pillars of the nave and the doorway in the porch, as well as the fine old font, are of Norman work: there is also an ancient stone altar slab, some fine old oak carving, and a Saxon cross with figures of a man and woman grasping a cross-the new tree of life: the church was restored in 1861 in memory of Albert, Lord Londesborough and has two stained memorial windows in the chancel. The register dates from 1583 and is in good condition. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £321, in the gift of John Fielden esq. and held by the Rev. George James Bostock, B.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge: a vicarage house was erected in 1876, partly by voluntary subscriptions and partly by a loan from Queen Anne’s bounty. The charities are £13 yearly value for distribution. J. Fielden esq. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is alluvial and clay; subsoil, chiefly sand. The chief crops are wheat and turnips, but a great portion is rich grazing land. The area of the parish is 3,411 acres; that of the township 1,230 acres; rateable value, £2,053; population in 1871, with North Milford, 112; population of the parish 708.
