Historical Description

KIRBY-WISKE (Gaelic, uisge, water), is a parish, township and village, on the western bank of the river Wiske, 2 miles south from Otterington station on the main line of the North Eastern railway, 4 north-west from Thirsk, 7 south-west from Northallerton and 27 northwest from York city, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, wapentake of East Gilling, Thirsk union and county court district, petty sessional division of Birdforth, rural deanery of Richmond East, archdeaconry of Richmond and diocese of Ripon. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of stone chiefly in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, with a Norman doorway, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 3 bells: the east window is stained: the west window was erected in 1901 by the late Hon. G. E. and Lady Louisa Lascelles, of Sion Hill: the church was restored in 1872 under the direction of the late G. E. Street esq. R.A. at a cost of £3,200, when the north wall was rebuilt, a new roof added and the church re-seated: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1615. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £535, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Northumberland K.G., P.C. and held since 1911 by the Rev. Arthur Herbert Watson M.A. of Queen’s College, Oxford. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel, built in 1825. Traces of an ancient encampment are visible near this place. The celebrated Roger Ascham, born here in 1515, was Latin secretary to Queen Mary and afterwards to Queen Elizabeth, as well as her tutor in the Greek language, and died Dec. 30, 1568. Dr. William Palliser, Bishop of Cloyne (1693) and Archbishop of Cashel (1694—1726), was also a native of this place. Sion Hill, the seat of Percy Scarcliffe esq. is near the village. Percy Scarcliffe esq. who is lord of the manor, Earl Cathcart and Henry Rutson esq. of Newby Wiske, are the principal landowners. The soil in many parts of the parish is fertile and productive; subsoil, chiefly sand. The chief crops are wheat, barley, turnips &c. The area of the township is 1,097 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £1,665; the population of the township in 1911 was 184, and in the parish, 724.
