Historical Description
Kirkdale church stands at the southern extremity of a vale. This is a place of some importance on account of its antiquity, and very ancient Saxon inscription. The situation of the church is thus described by Mr. Brooke, of the Herald’s College, F. S. A. in a letter to Mr. Gough, read at the Society of Antiquaries, January 16, 1777: —"The situation of Kirkdale church (says he), is extremely beautiful and romantic, though the building itself makes but a mean appearance, having little worth observation, except the inscription, either externally or within. It is situated in a fruitful vale, surrounded with hanging woods, and watered with a brook: the whole secluded from the world, being far removed from any inhabitants, and well adapted to give us an idea of the wisdom and piety of our Saxon ancestors, in chusing for such a purpose a situation so well calculated to inspire with devotion. "The inscription is over the south door, on a stone, seven feet by two, and is as follows, viz.
Orm, Gamul's Suna, bohte Sanctus Gregorius Minster thoune hil was al lo brocan & to Falan. Chehitle & Man newan from groundes Christe & Sanctis Gregorius in Eadward dagum cug in Tosti dagum Earl.
i. e. "Orm, Gamul’s son, bought St. Gregory’s church, when it was all ruined and fallen down. Chehitle and others renewed it from the ground to Christ and St. Gregory in Edward's days, the king, and Tosti’s days the earl."
Under the dial is:
And Hayward me wroht Brand Prs
This is dages Sal meria
To Sunna tillum Wenteres.
i. e. And Hawarth me made and Brand the priest, This is a draft exhibiting the time of day,
While the sun is passing to and from the Winter Solstice.
According to Mr. Gough, the date of this inscription must be before Tosti Earl of Northumberland, and 4th son of Goodwin Earl of Kent, was slain at Stamford bridge, near York, 1066, and between 1056 and 1065. The architecture of the church is Ante- Normanic. Orm had large possessions in Kirkby in the North Riding, Rydale wapentake, which entitled him to the rank of Thane, and he married Etheldrith, one of the five daughters of the Earl of Northumberland. William the Conqueror gave his estates to Hugh Fitz-Baldin. They were afterwards possessed by Roger de Estoteville and Nigil de Albini, the Lords Wake and Latimer.
KIRKDALE is a parish, consisting of the townships of Beadlam, Welburn, Wombleton, Nawton, Skiplam and Muscoates, in the Whitby division of the Riding, Ryedale wapentake and petty sessional division, Kirby Moorside union, county court district of Helmsley, rural deanery of Helmsley, archdeaconry of Cleveland and diocese of York. Part of Beadlam township, in the parish of Hemsley, was united to Kirkdale, for ecclesiastical purposes only, in 1882. The church of St. Gregory, standing in a valley, on the bank of the Hodge beck, in the township of Welburn, is a plain building of stone, chiefly in the Early English style, but has two Saxon doorways: it consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a small western tower containing 2 bells: over the south doorway is a slab of stone, forming a Sun. dial, about seven feet long and two feet wide, and divided into three compartments; the dial is in the centre, and around it, and on the stones above and below, are Saxon inscriptions cut in large and well-defined characters, and dating from about 1060: the following may be taken as a nearly literal translation; on the upper stone:-“Orm Gamal’s son bought St. Gregory’s church, when it was all-to broken and-to fallen; and he caused it to be made new from the ground; to Christ and St. Gregory, in Edward’s days the king; in Tosti’s days the earl”: round the dial is:— “This is the day’s Sun. marker at every time”; and on the third part is:-“and Hawarth me made and Brand the priests”: Tosti here mentioned was fourth son of Godwin, Earl of Kent, and brother to King Harold, and was created Earl of Northumberland by Edward the Confessor, in 1056: at the west end of the church there has been found a highly ornamental tombstone bearing a cross, the angles of which contain an inscription in Runic characters, read as “Cyning AEthelwald,” and conjectured to be the tombstone of a Saxon king of the seventh century: other carved fragments of stones remain on the south side of the tower, one of which has a crucifix rudely carved: in 1881 the chancel was completely restored by the patrons, at a cost of £500, during which several very curious remains were found, including a stone carved with the representation of an archer; these are now in the chancel: further restorations were carried out in 1907—8, when the walls of the north aisle and vestry were underpinned and the church re-roofed and reseated in oak; during the work several interesting relics were brought to light, including a stone carving of the Virgin and Child, and two coffin lids, supposed to be those of Bishop Cedd and King Ethelwald: in the field next the church the foundations of ancient buildings may be traced: there are 340 sittings. The register dates from the year 1579. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £252, including 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of the University of Oxford, and held since 1905 by the Rev. Frederick Walter Powell B.A. of Lincoln College, Oxford. The vicarage house at Beadlam was erected in 1894, at a cost of £1,500, The parish has charities of about £6 yearly. The population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1911 was 1,045.
