The parish, consisting of the townships of Dalton (including Mold Green and Bradley Mills), Lepton and Upper Whitley, is pleasantly situated in a deep vale, extending from 1 to 7 miles east of Huddersfield. The village of Kirkheaton is situated about 3 miles east from Huddersfield. The London and North Western railway (Leeds and Manchester line) has a station at Heaton Lodge in this township, 2 miles north from the village, 4 ½ miles from Dewsbury, and 29 ½ from Manchester, and there is also a station on the Kirkburton branch. The township is governed by a Local Board of Health of 9 members. The church of St. John the Baptist, originally erected in the 12th century, is an ancient building, consisting of chancel and nave, with a tower containing a clock and 6 bells; it was partly rebuilt in 1823, and the chancel at a later date, the expense being defrayed by a parish rate and subscription; there are memorials in the church to Joseph Walker of Lascelles Hall (1771), Benjamin Walker of Bog Hall (1761), a handsome marble monument to Rd. Beaumont (1704), several tablets to other members of the family, and a tomb of another Rd. Beaumont (1631). The register, which is in good condition, dates from the year 1653. The living is a rectory, with 240 acres of glebe, yearly value £600, with residence, in the gift of trustees and held by the Rev. Ralph Henry Maddox, formerly vicar of shelly and late missionary C.M.S. South India. In the churchyard, to the east of the church, is a monument erected to seventeen persons who met their deaths by a fire which took place at Colne Bridge Mills on the 14th of February, 1818. There are charities of £123 yearly, £22 of which is appropriated to the school, £18 expended in apprentice fees, and the remainder reserved for distribution. There is a Congregational chapel at a place called “The Fields,” in the township; the Wesleyans have one at Houses Hill, and another chapel at Upper Heaton; the Primitive Methodists have also a chapel at Colne Bridge. The manufacture of fancy woollen goods and vestings is carried on in this township but only to a limited extent. The Earl of Dartmouth.
