Historical Description
KIRKLINGTON is a parish, comprising the townships of Kirklington-with-UpsIand, Howgrave, Sutton Howgrave and East Tanfield, in the Thirsk and Malton division of the Riding, wapentake and petty sessional division of Hallikeld, county court district of Ripon, rural deanery of East Catterick, archdeaconry of Richomod and diocese of Ripon. Kirklington is a village in Bedale union, 1 mile west from Sinderby station and 3 northwest from Melmerby junction station, on the Leeds Northern section of the North Eastern railway, 7 north from Ripon and 6 south from Bedale. Kirklington-cum-Upsland is governed by an Urban District Council of seven members, under the Local Government Act of 1894, but was from 1862 controlled by a Local Board. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, and consisting of an Early English chancel with 14th century additions, nave, aisles, north and south porches and an embattled western tower 74 feet high, with pinnacles, and containing a clock and 3 bells: in the church are two fine tombs of the 14th century, with recumbent effigies of a knight and lady, assumed to be of the Mowbray family; and another tomb, with effigy, to Sir Christopher Wandesford, knighted at Greenwich in 1586, ob. 1590; there is also an inscribed brass to John Wandysford esq. ob. 1463, and Alianor, his wife: in 1890—93 the chancel was restored, a new carved oak screen erected, the floor relaid in concrete, and an organ chamber built, at a cost of £500, from designs of Mr. Charles Hodgson Fowler M.A., F.E.I.B.A. of Durham: there are 300 sittings. The earliest date in the existing register is of a baptism in 1568. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £450, including 90 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of R. Prior-Wandesforde esq. and held since 1909 by the Rev. Macdonnel Longuet Liebenrood. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, erected in 1877. Kirklington Hall, the property of Richard Henry Prior-Wandesforde esq. of Castle-Comer, co. Kilkenny, Ireland, who is lord of the manor and principal landowner, is the residence of Capt. Henry Wallis Prior-Wandesforde; the mansion was built in 1571, and contains two panelled rooms, one of which has a stuccoed ceiling with pendants. The soil is a strong loam; subsoil, gravelly. The chief crops are barley, seeds and turnips. Area of Kirklington-cum-Upsland township and Urban District, 1,987 acres; rateable value, £2,854; population in 1911 was 244, and in the ecclesiastical parish of Kirklington, 418.
Upsland has only two farmhouses.
Public Elementary school, for 120 children; average attendance, 73.
By Local Government Orders Nos. 3,268 and P. 1,126, the latter dated sept. 30,1895, part of Nunwick Howgrave civil parish in the administrative county of W. R. Yorks was transferred to Howgrave in the administrative county of N. R. Yorks.
