East Tanfield History

EAST TANFIELD is a township in the parish of Kirklington and Bedale union, 6 miles north-north-west from Ripon, situated near the river Ure. Rushwood is the residence of Sir Thomas Willans Nussey bart. D.L., J.P. who is the chief landowner. The soil is chiefly of a light gravelly nature; subsoil, gravel. The area is 1,276 acres of land and 19 of water; rateable value, £1,242; the population in 1911 was 64.
