Historical Description

LANGCLIFFE is a township and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1652 from the parish of Giggleswick, a mile norths east from settle, 16 miles north-west from Skipton, and 23 north-east from Lancaster, in the Northern division of the Riding, petty sessional division of West Stainclitffe, West division of the wapentake of Staincliffe and Ewcross, union and county court district of settle, archdeaconry of Craven and diocese of Ripon, situated on the river Ribble. The church of St. John the Evangelist is a stone building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave with 2 bells and six stained windows. The register dates from the yeat 1854. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £108 with residence, in the gift of John Paley esq. and held by the Rev. Samuel Sandberg M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There is a chapel for Methodists. Here is a waterfall, called Catteriek Force. Numerous fossils have been found in the neighbourhood, and there are extensive limestone quarries and limekilns. Langcliffe Hall, a fine building in the Tudor style, is the residence of Mrs. Perfect. John Paley esq. and John Preston esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is sandy; the subsoil is limestone. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area is 2,552 acres; rateable value, £3,795; the population in 1861 was 376; 1871, 665.

The National school (mixed) is supported by subscriptions & the weekly payments of the scholars; Miss Susannah Valin, mistress. A Sunday school is also held here.
